Felix the Cat was created by Pat Sullivan and Otto Messmer. Produced and conceived by Pat Sullivan, Felix bears his signature, but was drawn by Otto Messmer and later by Bill Nolan and Raoul Barré. *Feline Follies* (1919) was the first film to feature the cat. The graphic and poetic influence of the 1923 animated version of *Krazy Kat* is evident in it. The series enjoyed international success throughout the 1920s, but with the advent of American talking films and the creation of Mickey Mouse, Felix rapidly lost popularity and the series ended in the early 1930s before returning in 1960.

Felix the Cat was used during the Second World War by US Navy pilots in the Pacific.
