La Vigie

The story of aerial warfare over Germany as seen from the small Plexiglas bubble of a Lancaster's rear turret. Initially a member of Squadron 626, then Squadron 156 Pathfinder, Ron Smith flew 65 missions, which he recorded with the intensity afforded by his isolation at the rear of this metal monster. The book describes in fascinating detail the night-time experience of being enclosed in a Plexiglas capsule above the void, mostly in appalling weather, attacking some of the best-defended targets in Nazi Germany.
