Did you know?

Rosie the Riveter is a symbol of the strength and resilience shown by women during the Second World War. She represents the millions of women who left their homes to work in arms and munitions factories, contributing to the war effort.

The Rosie the Riveter character first appeared on US government propaganda posters to encourage women to enter the workforce while men were at war. Rosie's most famous image was created by artist J. Howard Miller in 1942. It shows a strong, confident woman wearing a red bandana with white polka dots, rolling up the sleeve of her overalls and chanting the famous slogan "We Can Do It!".

Although the image of Rosie the Riveter is often associated with the USA, women all over the world played a similar role during the war. In Great Britain, for example, they were known as the "Land Girls".

After the war, many women were encouraged to return to their traditional role as housewives, but the image of Rosie the Riveter has remained a symbol of women's emancipation and contribution to society ever since. Today, it is often used to promote gender equality and women's emancipation in many fields.
