The story of Fifinella begins in 1942, when Roald Dahl, who was suspended from the Royal Air Force (RAF) due to injury, wrote The Gremlins, a fairy tale about the dangers of combat flying. In this version, the word “fifinella” refers only to female gremlins, not to any particular gremlin. As a pilot, Dahl knows pre-war RAF folklore about the Gremlin, the mischievous source of every unknown mechanical problem.
For a film project based on Roald Dahl's book The Gremlin, Walt Disney conceived the character of Fifinella. During World War II, the Women Airforce Pilots (WASP) request permission to use the character as their official mascot, and the Disney Company grants them the rights.
